Hackbarth Goes the Distance

Kim Sweet in the Grandman TriathlonKim Sweet Completed her First Sprint Triathlon

[Mobile, Alabama June 5th, 2011]  Kim Sweet is Public Relations and Marketing Director for Hackbarth Delivery Service. She embarked on a health journey a year before The Grandman triathlon with a weight management program. About 6 months and 30 pounds less into the program there was bad news, a cyst was found in the bottom of her left lung. She decided that day to start a fitness program and she needed a goal- The Grandman Triathlon benefitting the Mobile Baykeepers and Camp Rap-a Hope. The Grandman was a natural fit for Kim as she has worked with them on behalf of Hackbarth for several years and had lived in Fairhope, the city on Mobile Bay where the triathlon is held.

The good news was she had the genetic cyst removed with little complications in October and after eight weeks of recovering, she began her training program in earnest in December. Finish LineThere were ups and downs as with any long term goal and on the morning of June 4th, she was not sure her lungs had the ability to keep up the endurance needed to finish. As Kim said; “I am not in it to win it, I am in it to finish it!”

The Grandman is a sprint triathlon, with a 1/3 mile swim in Mobile Bay followed by an 18 mile bike ride through rolling hills and a 3 mile run for the finish. As she passed a few bikers along the way who had given up, all Kim wanted to do was cross the finish line. She did! Last place and glad to be there, even if a little out of breath; Because, as Kim will tell you, “Finishing is finishing. I was last because those behind me gave up. I have to set the example for my two boys- we finish what we start!”  She is thankful for all the support given by her family and friends at Hackbarth Delivery Service. Her goal for next year is to complete it under two hours along with her husband, Sean Sweet.
